Costa Rican Family Holidays

Costa Rica is a world-class, perfect family holiday destination. If you love adventuring in the great outdoors, or are simply seeking some blissful winter sun, or if your family will enjoy the company of seriously friendly and laid back locals - these are just a few reasons why Costa Rica should be top of your list.  Zip-lining through the canopy, visiting sloth sanctuaries, trekking up volcanoes, rafting down rivers and learning how to surf can all be a part of your Costa Rica family vacation.
Costa Rica is a small country, roughly the size of Switzerland, jam-packed full of different ecosystems and habitats that are home to a huge variety of flora and fauna. All of these can easily be explored with minimal time spent travelling.

Why visit Costa Rica for your family holiday?

  • Wildlife: There are 27 national parks in Costa Rica, all abundant with wildlife. To give you an idea, the Osa Peninsula, covering 164 m2, is home to over 150 butterfly species, 500 bird species, 124 mammals and 5,000 plants types! Costa Rica is richly rewarding for any families interested in wildlife.
  • Beaches: blessed with both the Pacific Ocean and the Carbibean, Costa Rica is a great country to explore and then reward yourself with some rest and relaxation on a beach.
  • Activities: Costa Rica has a great infrastructure for a range of activites to keep the family occupied. You can zip wire through the jungle canopy, raft down rivers, learn to surf or relax in hot springs for something a little more peaceful.
  • Especially when kids are involved, you want to make sure your family holiday is not made cumbersome by lengthy travel. This is where Costa Rica comes into its own – there is such variety in this small country, that it has never been easier to have a logistically easy yet superbly varied family holiday.

  • Which are the most family friendly hotels in Costa Rica?

Family friendly lodges range from the simple, rustic, yet wonderfully located lodges in the heart of the jungle such as Aninga Lodge in Tortuguero, to a more lavish and luxurious hotel, such as Nayara, a multi award winning lodge in the volcanic region of Arenal. For the ultimate wildlife experience then Lapa Rios or El Remanso in the Osa Peninsula are the crème de la crème of Central American lodges.

Costa Rica Family Holidays Itinerary Planning

All international flights land in San Jose, the capital city. However, for a family holiday we would only recommend spending only one night there as it can be a little chaotic. From here, some like to head east to Tortuguero for a fantastic wildlife experience before coming back in land to Arenal for all the activities under the sun! You may then choose to flit over to the cloud forests of Monteverde for more wildlife and/or take your pick of pacific coast beach destinations in the Nicoya or Osa Peninsulas. From surfer towns to amazing snorkelling and the lazy joy of pristine beaches, Costa Rica will certainly cater to whatever your family's interests may be, and it will do so in style and with a real zest for fun.

What is the perfect age to visit Costa Rica?

Costa Rica is perfect for children and adults of all ages because there is so much that appeals to everyone. We will put you in touch with expert guides, well trained in looking after and engaging with people of all ages. A young child might be enthralled about spending time in a butterfly garden ticking off the different coloured butterflies they spot, or walking around looking for monkeys, to caring for sloths at a wildlife sanctuary. For those slightly older children looking for a little more activity and a thrill, then there are zip wires, rafting and horse riding to consider. For an older person that wants to see the wildlife and learn all about the unique ecosystem then the nature trails and stays at remote lodges will be ideal.
