Things to do in Peru

A Peru holiday is filled with opportunities and activities that cater for all ages and interests. The team at South America Odyssey love Peru, and we have put together our top things to do whilst on a Peru vacation.

  • Lima, the capital city, is steeped in history, with some of the continents most revered museums and private collections that are open to the public. For foodies then there is no other South American city quite like it- Lima boasts 4 of the top 50 restauratns in the world. Speak to us to secure your reservation.
  • Throughout the Andean mountains you will find small inca villages, traditional farming communities, spectacular scenery and the lost city of Machu Picchu. All Peru holidays must include a couple of nights in the gorgeous city of Cusco, the former capital of the Inca Empire.
  • For adventurers, The Sacred Valley is a fantastic place to experience the history of the country whilst also getting your adrenalin flowing - everything from horse riding to water rafting is possible in this dramatic mountanous region.
  • Nature lovers can easily access the remote Amazonian lodges near Puerto Maldonado and The Tambopata National Park. Spending time at an eco lodge is an opportunity not to be missed. For lovers of luxury boats then head up to Iquitos and sail down the Amazon with daily stops to explore the jungle and the remote indigenous communities.
  • Trains are a growing part of the tourist infrastructure in Peru. There are now several spectacular journeys through the Andean mountains on an orient express style train. Some journeys are a few hours in duration, others routes are day trips, and there is also a luxurious Belmond overnight train.

What are the best hotels in Peru?

The infrastructure for tourism in Peru is exceptional and there are lots of wonderful hotels from which to choose. In the Andean mountain range you can stay at boutique, luxurious and charming hotels such as the Relais & Chateaux Sol y Luna. Profits from this first class hotel are reinvested into the orphanage run by the hotels owner. In Cusco, we advise opting for a hotel that's located in the heart of the old town so that you can enjoy the buzz of the city by day and night. For a charming, boutique and utterly first class hotel then the best is La Casona, although it does carry a price tag. A smaller and simpler option that carries a lower price tag is the Casa San Blas which is a centrally located option in the old quarter. In Lima, Hotel B is exceptional and a must for those looking for a refined and arty option in the bohemian neighbourhood.

There really are a wealth of good accommodation options, and it is easy to feel swamped by the vast amounts of information you can find on each. Take a moment to have a chat with one of our specialists, all of whom know every property we recommend exceptionally well. It really is worthwhile to talk through your various exciting Peru holiday options in order to find your perfect fit.

    Top three Peru tips

  • Food: The food is spectacular and well worth venturing out of your comfort zone for. If you like seafood, you should try ceviche.
  • Cocktails: Try the zesty national cocktail, the pisco sour, a refreshing white grape based cocktail.
  • Visit a market: A local market is the hub of local life in the countryside and wandering around the hustle and bustle of a market is a great way to get an interesting insight into local life.
