Nicoya Peninsula

During the dry season the sleepy fishing communities of the Nicoya Peninsula awaken from their slumber and boutique yoga retreats, stylish beachfront lodges and small restaurants and bars blossom along this coast. All good news for the passing explorer seeking elegant options for rest and relaxation.
The Nicoya Peninsula is split into two main provinces; Guanacaste in the north is hot and arid and Puntarenas in the south, which is greener and more rugged. Holidaymakers and honeymooners here spend their time soaking up the sun, generally whilst swinging in hammocks with a zesty tropical cocktail to hand.

Out and about on the Nicoya Peninsula

If you are seeking something a little more active than hammock-swinging, there are snorkelling day trips, visits to nearby waterfalls or surfing lessons available to those wishing to work up a bit of adrenaline!

Our opinion

Lots of surf means that many of the beaches are not conducive to swimming.

Where to stay

There are three main styles of places to stay on this coast. Tamarindo is a cool surfery town with a couple of small boutique hotels. In Puntarenas you will find more remote options like Capitan Suizo. Alternatively head further north and stay at one of the international larger sized chains such as El Mangroove. It all depends on what suits you best.
