Quito is a bustling capital city situated among Andean peaks and volcanoes at 2,850m. The main points of interest lie in and around the old town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Quito is a city of abundance, with plenty of colonial churches, plazas, intriguing museums, multiple markets and street stalls selling everything from roasted guinea pig to quinoa soups.

Out and about in Quito

Quito is a great introduction to Ecuador, a city that is as diverse and varied as the country that it heads up. There is plenty to do in and around town; you might enjoy exploring the many museums and churches, or choose to head a short distance out of town to take an obligatory photo straddling the equator. You can spend time perusing the markets, awash with colourful locally made artisan goods, or take a ride up the teleferico for a panoramic view over this sprawling capital city.

Quito is a great city to slowly explore the historical centre, enjoy some local food and relax at one of its superb hotels before venturing out further into the country.

Where to stay

There are many hotels in the old town that are full of charm and wonderfully located to explore the most interesting part of the city - Hotel Plaza Grande and Patio Andaluz.
It is important that you take things easy when you first arrive as your body needs to recover from the flight and acclimatise to the altitude.
